What Do You Do With Talon Schreechers?

Justin’s advice to Solomon[in Chilmea’s Sword] when asked what should happen to his mother’s talon schreechers

, “Talon schreechers generally outlive their riders, as they are young when they are paired with their knights. So mother had a system, to sell birds to other favoured knights when riders died or became unable to ride them.

But, be careful! Mother used to limit the number of schreechers any knight could own, so that no-one could challenge her. And the schreechers sold were usually older birds near the end of their working lives. Any that were really devoted to their riders and pined when their riders died, were destroyed.

This sounds harsh. But mother loved her schreechers and didn’t want any to suffer unnecessarily .You should consult with the Talon Master who will help you decide what is best for the individual birds you intend to sell. He can be a hard character to deal with, but he cares what happens to the birds and he will give you the best advice possible.

The racing, scimitar schreechers, whose racing careers are very short, are less of a problem, as they are always sold on overseas to the Ancient Isles when their racing days are over, unless they are used as breeding stock. They are incredibly expensive to buy, but sell for a very good price. Limiting the numbers sold to any individual would not be necessary, as they would be totally useless as a protection force.

Finally, the Death Squad schreechers: these take much longer to train than other schreechers; are much too risky to sell and are always destroyed at the end of their flying careers… I don’t think anyone but the Talon Master will miss them if you decide to have them killed,” he added bitterly.  “Although if you want to keep the Talon Master happy, you might consider allowing him to keep Destroyer… at least for the time being.

“ Now that you are re-united with Glimmershalf what do you think we should do about the remaining royal Schreechers, Copperlite, and Red Lord?” probed Solomon.

“For the moment I suggest you keep them at the Eyrie. Traditionally, all royal birds are looked after in old age and Copperlite deserves to be well treated. He served my mother well for many years and unless he really pines I think he would be best left where he is. As for Red Lord, don’t sell him, if you don’t have to. He is one of the few links I have left with my brother. We were very different, but we both loved flying.”

An introduction to Alfred Investigus Rygeal Or Uncle Many Times.

Alfred-col2

Monsieur Fusselle decided to use the time to pay a long over-due visit to his uncle, Alfred Investigus Rygeal .

Actually, Alfred was his Great, Great, Great, Great uncle and was rather an exceptional character. He spent almost all his life in the cellars below the fortress, investigating, inventing and producing potions. He was a very secret individual who served the fortress as chemist and apothecary. What he didn’t know about sickness wasn’t worth knowing, but no-one beyond the confines of the fortress was aware that many of the cures they bought in shops all over Starmereion were the result of his work.  At nearly 200 years old, his memory for cures and enormous experience in dealing with ailments was unmatchable!

Monsieur Fusselle knocked on the cellar door and was invited to enter by a surprisingly young voice. He did so and was confronted by a room cluttered with books, experiments, and lined with shelves of potions and medicines, each meticulously labelled. A blazing fire crackled in the hearth and a very bright lantern illuminated a central table which was dominated by an enormous open ledger. In this, every potion was listed.

Seated on a high stool beside the table sat his brightly clothed uncle, known affectionately to all his many generations of relations as Uncle Many Times because of his great age.  Monsieur Fusselle had not seen Alfred in the ten years, but knew that unlike himself Alfred would have changed very little in that time, as Alfred was a half goblie .His goblie heritage meant that he aged very slowly. In fact, looking at him, someone who didn’t know his history would have guessed that he was little more that a teenager, instead of nearly 200! His eyes, in common with most goblies were of different colours, but he didn’t have the usual hooked nose and long curls of his goblie ancestors. His nose was fairly straight and hair was short, fair and untidy. He was taller than most goblies and a lot thinner. He had an engaging smile and a musical voice.

Meet the Sorceress

Raheel-col2

The Splinter’s Dust The Bed of Blood

With waves of burnished hair cascading down her shoulders like a fiery sea; eyes the colour of an azure ocean and lips more scarlet than a robin’s breast, Raheel, Sorceress of Unicorns and Guardian of Sea Stallions and River Horses, was an awe-inspiring sight. Not even Crudelitas’ dark, tumultuous beauty, or Superbia’s cool, aloof and glacial perfection, could compare with the Sorceress’ burning, all-consuming glory, which radiated around her in a shimmering caress.

She was a healer by profession, but those who failed to pay in full, for her skill in medicines, also knew her to be vindictive and cruel. Few mortals asked her for help or cared to cross her, as her gaze was fathomless, yet so frighteningly penetrating that its intensity almost pierced the heart. But none knew that her lips were more deadly still. They held a fatal secret; a seering kiss of death!

 Raheel-dragon

There was a chilling laugh and the dragon in front of them wavered and shimmered in the gloom and then slowly sank to the ground.  For a few seconds a crumpled mass of tangled skin and coils seemed to be all that remained of the dragon’s malevolent soul and then as if defying death, from its gaping mouth an awe-inspiring woman materialised with hair that seemed made of tongues of flame and eyes like the deepest ocean.
